Michael the Brave’s monastery on the hill above the Dâmbovița, as it may have stood in 1595, the year Ottoman troops occupied Bucharest.
01The history
Michael the Brave founded the monastery and dedicated it to St Nicholas. Sources date the founding to 1589, 1591 or 1594. It stood on Dealul Spirii, above the Dâmbovița, on the site of an older church, inside stone walls built like a fortress. The hill was lived on long before the monastery: excavations around it, published by the archaeologist Gheorghe Cantea in 1959, found pottery and other remains of settlements going back more than 3,000 years, from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age of the Dacians.
In August 1595 Sinan Pasha’s army entered Bucharest. In October, after the battle of Giurgiu, it withdrew across the Danube and left much of the city destroyed. The accounts that survive do not say what happened to the monastery itself.
Over the following centuries it served as a princely residence, a military hospital and a medical school, and from 1864 it housed the State Archives. In 1984–1985, to clear the ground for the Civic Centre, the cells and outbuildings were demolished. The engineer Eugeniu Iordăchescu moved the church, about 9,000 tonnes of it, 289 metres on rails, and the bell tower after it.
The church is built; some sources date the founding to 1589 or 1591.
Ottoman troops hold Bucharest from August to October.
The State Archives move into the monastery.
Gheorghe Cantea publishes the excavations on the hill.
The church and bell tower are moved on rails; the cells are demolished.
Monastic life resumes, with an abbess installed in May.
02Three ways to read it
The excavations on the hill, the founder, the dedication to St Nicholas and the move of 1985 are all recorded, the move down to the figures: 289 metres east and almost six metres down.
Before he became prince, the story goes, Michael was sentenced to death and prayed to an icon of St Nicholas, promising the saint a monastery if he lived. In one version the executioner, frightened by his face, ran away.
The monastery belongs to Chapter III, set in 1595, when war and fire reach a mostly wooden city.
03Today
The church and bell tower stand at Strada Sapienței 4, behind blocks of flats on Splaiul Independenței, near Izvor metro station. The hill where the monastery stood is now under the Palace of the Parliament complex. Monastic life resumed here in May 2026.
